Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the procedure to know genuineness of Diamond?

If Diamond is certified by Agencies like IGI, GIA & other similar type of organization are only relevant. Hsk will never suggest traditional ideas like scratching diamond with beer bottle; or checking with weight & thermal conductivity, etc

2. Which Diamond will be always a safe & better investment?

Round Diamonds are always a first choice as far as investment point of view is concerned. Choices can also vary with the color & clarity of Diamond. Elegancy of Fancy diamonds is higher than the actual.

3. What are the properties of Diamond?

These are the basic properties of Diamonds: 1- Flat "sides" of the diamond are known as FACETS 2- The typically frosty white ring at the widest part is known as Girdle 3- The portion of the stone below the girdle is known as Pavilion 4- The portion of the stone above the girdle is known as Crown 5- Width of the diamond between the girdle is known as Diameter 6- The quality of the diamond that breaks reflected light into a colorful array is a Fire of the Diamond 7- The bottom point (actually a facet) on a brilliant cut stone is Culet 8- The top octagonal facet of a brilliant cut Diamond is Table 9- Height of Gemstone from Culet to Table is Depth of Stone 10- The quality of the diamond that reflects light without changing it is known as Sparkle or Brilliance 11- A rough flat spot visible on Girdle or a tiny section on the side of the raw diamond is Natural. It’s normally on Girdle only. 12- “CRACKS “ in a diamond, appears as a white feather within the stone.

4. What are other important Factors of Diamonds?

Except Fire & Sparkle all others are basic geometry of diamond. Fire & Sparkle are considered as variable characteristics of Diamonds which are based on the proportion on pro rata basis/ vice versa basis. As far as Fluorescence is concerned it can occurs naturally and synthetically. But if Fluorescence is high, it gives adverse effect & decreases the value of Stone. Naturals remain un effective, if not in high quantity. Any crack that extends more than 1/3 of the way through the stone may cause structural problems.

5. Normally a Diamond consist how many Facets?

In “ Single Cut” diamond, there are only 18 Facets, If it is brilliant full-cut stone, there are 58 facets; 32 facets plus the table above the girdle and 24 facets plus the culet below the girdle

6. What is the Role of “ Four C ‘S” in Diamond Quality?

The “ Four C ‘S” in Diamond quality are described as follows;

In Brief :

Carat is a parameter to weight the Diamond. 1 carat is 1/5 of a gram or 200 milligrams. 50 point stone is 0.50 carat as there are 100 points to a carat.

Color is again an important parameter; it is used for rating of Diamond. It works in ascending alphabetical order like as:

  • D, E and F - "Colourless"
  • G, H, I & J - "near colourless"
  • K, L and M - faint yellow or "top silver"
  • N to Z - very light or “light yellow”
  • Z+ - grades are considered "fancy yellow"

E-F to the J-K range are higher in use.

Clarity: can be classified as under:

IF1Internally Flawless
VVS11Very, Very slightly included
VVS22VVS1 to a less perfect degree
VS13Very slightly included
VS24VS1 to a less perfect degree
SI15Slightly included
SI26SI1 to a less perfect degree
I28-9I1 to a less perfect degree
I39-10Severely Included

7.which C is more important in Diamond? Color or Clarity?

The most demanded color in diamond is White. Range begins from D & ends to Z.As D color is the whitest & costliest one. E to H color comes under category of Good White color. It is very tough to differentiate in color in this category, once the diamond is set. Color is most important in big sizes except round brilliant. Viewing Color from naked eye required a good practice. HSK suggests to their customers to buy good color diamonds (whichever carat range suits to their budget). If a diamond has cut properly, even if it’s having blue fluorescence it will give a look of H or J color. As far as Emerald Cut or Asscher cut Diamond is concerned, it require a higher quality of color and clarity as they have large see-through facets which make it easy to see any defect

8.In India which “C” gets more importance?

Importance among four “C” s” vary from person to person. But normally it comes like Colour -> Cut -> Clarity -> Carat HSK will always suggest their costumers to CUT & Color before Clarity, reason being S1 grade Diamonds are visible from naked eye. The inclusions are visible only under the magnification from a trained eye. And

9.Define or Explain “Ideal Cut Diamonds”

If a Diamond have a table percentage between 53% and 57% and a depth or height of 58% to 60% comes under the category of Ideal cut Diamond. These diamonds are 15to 20% costlier than the normal market cost. Stones with table percentages above 70% & depths over 64% or under 57%.are not recommended by HSK.

10.Mostly diamond rings have inclusions; Myth or reality

In a normal course people are surrounded by Myth like as : 1.Large milky or cloudy areas 2. Big cracks...they threaten the durability. These include big feathers more then 1/3 of the diameter of the Stone) 3.Big chips...they'll get bigger 4.Big white, black or colored lines. They reduce brilliance and threaten durability

11.How to access poor cut diamond?

A Diamond can be stated as poor cut , If: 1. A white circle resembling a donut in the face-up view of a diamond. It occurs when the pavilion is too shallow and the girdle is reflected out. 2. Obvious dark spots/centers when viewed face-up. These indicate that the pavilion was cut too deep. 3. Extremely thick girdles reduce the brilliance and make the stone look small for its weight. 4. A girdle of uneven thickness (for reasons other than geometry) around the stone.

12.Please recommend shapes normally used in engagement rings?

It again vary from person to person. HSK advise their costumers for Round Brilliant shaped Diamond, reason being It reflects more light back from the table, accounting for the beauty of the diamond. Pears & Marquise can also be a good choice. IF budget is good, fancy shape can also be suggested.

13.I am looking for an elegant engagement Ring. Please suggest & justify.

Well HSK will suggest you round brilliant diamond. But certain points before choosing engagement ring are to be kept in mind like as: 1. Personal Choice 2. Desired brilliance (round brilliant cut has the most) 3. Weight (Fancies diamond rings look more stylish in large sizes) 4. How big you want it to look (Fancies tend to look larger than white diamonds) 5. Shape and size of hand (plays a vital role) 6. Color and clarity of diamond (round brilliant cut hides defects and yellow tints best).

Small round Diamond is easily available. Its very easy to put in desired shape as these are easy to cut. This is the reason why about 75 per cent of the diamonds sold in the world are round brilliant cut diamonds!. If we go in larger size rounds are in higher demand and the supply is limited. The only substitute is large marquis, which is can cost as much as or more than the round brilliant.

14.which are other fancy colors in Diamonds?

Fancy colored diamonds in a common term known as Z+ Diamond. The Z+ Diamonds are very rare in nature, that’s why it’s very expensive. Yellow and pink diamonds are the second option after fancy colors, and most likely will continue to be for years to come. Of late, there has been an increased demand for orange, blue, and green colored diamonds. As they are rare in nature, supplies are limited, and there are no fixed criteria for prices.

15.What can be the criteria for color Diamond Prices?

As it is said earlier there is no fixed criteria for the prices of Color diamonds , But; 1.Hue (the rarer the color, the greater the cost) 2.Richness or saturation of the color (ranging from very light to light to intense to vivid) 3.Purity of the color (whether the color is bright and clear, or clouded).plays a role in fixing prices.

16.what are other factor to be considered assessing Color diamond Prices?

Hsk suggests to kept below mentioned things in mind while calculating Color Diamond Prices: 1. Clarity, color distribution and cut together determine the cost of a yellow diamond. 2. Diamonds less than 0.80 carat can cost 10%-20% less. 3. Exceptionally well cut stones and stones with a VVS or IF clarity can cost 10%-20% more. 4. Secondary colors, such as brownish yellow, are less expensive.

17.To judge white Diamond or Fancy Color Diamond is same ?

In fancy color Diamond inclusions cannot be seen with the untrained, naked eye, small pinpoints or feathers do not usually affect fancy colors due to the deeper coloring of the diamond. But in case of White diamonds these factors are easily visible from naked eye. Fancy diamonds of VS or better clarity are rare in nature and therefore command a greater price.

18.what inclusions are mostly found in color Diamonds?

In colored diamonds, the inclusions are often crystals that exhibit much the same color of diamonds. To the untrained eye, these crystals blend right in with a diamond's color and can create the appearance of more brilliance.

19.what are champagne Pink Diamonds?

Champagne diamonds which are available in a secondary pink color are popular. When you faced up, these stones display light to bold flashes of pink in their fire. As far as price factor is concerned Champagne diamonds are not as expensive as white diamonds. They are available in a sparkling range of champagne tones, from light to dark champagne and fancy cognac.

20.Define or Explain the term Bow-tie effect ?

The term Bow-tie effect is normally visible in marquise, oval, pear and some heart-shaped diamonds. The bow tie looks like two triangular dark shapes joined at a point in the centre of the stone. It is due to variations in the pavilion facet angles that are longer than wider.HSK will consider as negative factor. In a well-cut diamond its appearance should be minimal or absent and certainly not a distraction.

21.What is a Cubic Zirconia

Cubic Zirconia stones are a human made diamond simulants with optical characteristics very close to natural diamonds. On the mohs scale of 1-10 for hardness, a CZ is 8.5 - 8.9, while a diamond is 10. Sand or dirt will not scratch a CZ or a diamond, but CZs and diamonds will both scratch glass. A CZ weighs more than a diamond, and this is a principal way to tell them apart.

It is not possible to see this inscription with the naked eye, and extremely difficult to see even with a 10x magnifying loupe.

26.How does the HRD certificate compare to GIA certificate?

GIA is the oldest, well-recognized and reputed lab, especially in the United States. On the other hand, HRD is well-regarded by the diamond community in Europe. HRD and GIA differ ever so slightly in systems of grading. Both agencies are bound to confirm their own system and overall, both do good and comparable jobs. You should to be able to buy a diamond with a high degree of confidence with either lab's report.

29.buying a certified diamond with certificate is how much important?

Definitely! Buying with a certificate from a recognized authority such as the AGS, GIA or IGI provides surety for your diamond has the credentials to be recognized worldwide as a valuable item.
